PatentTerm Online workshops are intensive one-day sessions providing extensive training for performing Patent Term Adjustment (PTA) calculations using the PatentTerm Online system. Typically, these are done on a fee basis via distance learning (lecture only), at customer facilities, or at one of our training partner facilities (by arrangement). For more information or to schedule training for your organization, please contact us via e-mail to Support@PatentTerm.com.

Description

Workshops begin with an overview of PTA under the American Inventors Protection Act of 1999 (AIPA). The overview includes:

  • Summary of basic PTA calculations
  • Review and explanation of numerous pertinent AIPA laws and regulations
  • Common questions and pitfalls arising in performing calculations
  • Interrelationship between PTO Patent Application Information Retrieval (PAIR) system and AIPA patent term

Thereafter, the majority of the day is devoted to a hands-on computer lab session with each participant working at an individual computer workstation. Each participant will use the PatentTerm Online system to analyze real U.S. applications. Typically, time permits the analysis of between six and eight applications, with each case being selected by the instructor to illustrate specific aspects of PTA. Participants will:

  • Create new applications in the system
  • Enter, download, and edit prosecution history data
  • Apply and customize patent term adjustment rules
  • Generate detailed term analysis reports
  • Audit actual PTO patent term adjustment data

Workshops are taught in a computer lab, and are characterized by a small class size allowing close interaction between faculty and participants.

Who Should Attend

PatentTerm Online workshops are designed for patent professionals interested in using the PatentTerm Online system to calculate AIPA patent terms, verify the accuracy of PTO adjustment calculations, or determine the proper expiration date of competitors' patents. For firms handling a large number of patents, we find they often designate a few individuals to be particularly knowledgeable about PTA calculations. Attendance by such individuals would be especially beneficial.

Participants must have a strong knowledge of U.S. patent prosecution as well as basic computer and Internet skills. Familiarity with patent term adjustment under AIPA and the PAIR system is helpful, but not required.
